Delta Junction brought the biggest moment of this part of the trip. After thousands of miles north from Mile 0 in Dawson Creek, Brian and Michelle had officially driven the entire Alaska Highway.

The stop also turned personal. The day fell on a family wedding anniversary, a coincidence neither of them arranged.

Here is how both days played out.

Day One: Hilo to an Active Volcano

From the port of Hilo, their NCL excursion headed inland to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The guide filled the ride with island history and a bit of botany, but the landscape did the real talking once they reached the summit of Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

Standing along the edge of the massive caldera, the ground looked like another planet. What appears to be smoke rising from the earth is actually steam: rainwater seeps below the surface, hits rock heated by magma, and rises back through the cracks as vapor. Watching the ground breathe like that was the moment the tour justified itself.

Kilauea is still reshaping the island. A 2018 eruption collapsed much of the summit, expanding Halemaumau Crater and permanently changing the view. For many Native Hawaiians, this is sacred ground, traditionally believed to be the home of Pele, the deity of volcanoes and fire. The park warned it might erupt that day. It stayed quiet while they visited, but the timing was uncanny: Kilauea erupted again just two days later.

The Stops Along the Way

The excursion was more than the crater rim. It paused at the temporary Welcome Center, located at Kilauea Military Camp, a military recreation and lodging facility inside the park. With the main visitor center closed for renovation, rangers and the official gift shop had temporarily moved nearby.

There was also time for the steam vents and another viewpoint off the Crater Rim Trail, plus the local warning that taking lava rock home brings bad luck. According to their guide, people mail it back after a run of misfortune.

Before returning to the ship, the tour stopped at Big Island Candies, a Hilo shop known for chocolate-dipped shortbread and macadamia treats. Samples appeared the moment they walked in.

Day Two: Kona, With No Plans at All

Overnight, the Pride of America carried them around the island to Kona. They tendered the next morning ashore with nothing booked. The waterfront was walkable straight off the tender, but with most of the day open, they headed south into Kona coffee country to Greenwell Farms.

A Family Farm Since 1850

Greenwell Farms traces its story to 1850, when Henry Nicholas Greenwell arrived from England and settled in Kealakekua as a young man. It started as a citrus farm. He and his wife, Elizabeth Caroline, spent close to forty years farming, ranching, and developing their Kona coffee, which earned international recognition at the 1873 World’s Fair in Vienna. Generations later, in the early 1980s, his grandson Norman and great-grandson Thomas brought coffee back to some of the original land. Today the farm keeps around 85 acres of coffee orchards and manages roughly 60 more for other local growers.

Timing shaped the visit. Two months earlier, a powerful Kona low had brought flooding that damaged the processing area and wiped out much of the nursery, destroying tens of thousands of young plants. By May, tours had resumed, though parts of the facility were still off-limits during a long recovery. Even so, Brian and Michelle walked the coffee trees and followed the process from cherry to cup.

A Few Things That Stuck

Their guide walked them through how a cherry becomes a bean, and a few details stood out:

• All Kona coffee is Arabica, valued for being aromatic, less bitter, and lower in caffeine.
• The coffee berry borer, a pest that reached Hawaii in 2010, burrows into the cherry and stays there, so eating one straight off the tree is a bad idea.
• Most beans grow as two flat halves, but a small share form a single round pea berry that roasts differently and sells for around $70 a pound.

The tour was free, tastings included, and they left with a bag of beans.

For Brian and Michelle, day one delivered. Standing on an active volcano and watching steam rise where lava could return at any time is not something photos capture, and the stops around it filled the day without padding it.

This trip was their celebration of America’s 250th. Two days, three major tours, and one van that does not fit where most tourists park. The day did not start the way they planned.

The Parking Plan That Fell Apart Before 8 A.M.

Most people touring D.C. in an RV stay at Cherry Hill Park in Maryland and let the campground do the hard part. You catch a bus inside the park, connect to the metro, and the train drops you near the White House complex.

It works. It also adds stops Brian and Michelle did not have time for, not with a tour scheduled at 8:30 that morning.

So they tried something they thought was simpler. They aimed straight for Union Station and its covered oversized garage, planning to Uber from there to the meetup spot. They called ahead twice, a week out and again the day before. Both times: no reservation needed, just roll in.

Then they pulled up and got turned away. Every oversized spot had been locked down more than a month earlier by school field trip buses. Nobody on the phone had mentioned it.

A security guard saved the morning by pointing them to a secured outdoor lot nearby. The attendant there first said he could not take them, then charged roughly double once they explained the bind. They took it.

The night before, they had already driven an hour out to a Cracker Barrel to shorten the morning. That single decision is the only reason they made the tour. The lesson landed early: in this city, closer beats convenient, and a phone confirmation means very little.

Inside the White House

After the parking scramble, the checkpoints, and the pre-dawn wake-up, they were finally standing inside the White House. It took a minute to process. A place tied to so many presidents and moments that shaped the country, and now they were walking through it themselves.

A Secret Service agent tipped them off to a French bakery nearby, and it became one of the better meals of the trip. Pistachio strawberry French toast, a chorizo and sweet potato omelet, a quiet table after a loud morning.

Walking the National Mall

From there they set out along the National Mall on foot.

The Lincoln Memorial is one of those landmarks you have seen many times in photos and films. Standing in front of it is a different thing. The size, the columns, the steps. It makes you slow down.

Then you walk inside and there he is, Abraham Lincoln seated above the crowd, watching over a place that has witnessed some of the country’s most powerful moments.

Next came the World War II Memorial, a tribute to the generation that served and sacrificed, ringed by pillars, fountains, and the name of every state and territory.

Beyond it rose the Washington Monument. With the Capitol in one direction and Lincoln behind them, the scale of the history packed into this single stretch of ground came into focus. Tickets to go up were already sold out, and the reflecting pool was drained for construction, but the walk itself delivered.

Arlington and a Silence You Do Not Forget

Later they took the metro to Arlington National Cemetery, and the feeling shifts the moment you arrive. After a day of monuments and city energy, Arlington is quieter and more reflective.

They bought tickets for the 35-minute tour that loops the grounds, hopping on and off along the way.

The most emotional part was reaching the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Watching the guard move with that precision and discipline was something they will not forget. There is a silence there that feels different, everyone present understanding they are witnessing something sacred.

Day Two: The Capitol and the Building They Almost Skipped

They drove back to the Cracker Barrel for one more night to stay close. Day two opened with a Capitol tour, and this time the Union Station parking actually held up.

The tour walked them through the history, the artwork, the architecture, and the massive dome overhead. What they found was nothing like what the one-star reviews suggested.

First Things First: There Are No Redwoods Here

The nickname “Redwoods of the East” sets expectations that the park immediately subverts, and that’s actually part of what makes it interesting.

There are no actual redwood trees inside Congaree National Park. What earns the comparison are massive loblolly pines, towering bald cypress, and water tupelo trees that stretch into the sky with a canopy height that rivals anything on the West Coast. Standing at the base of one and looking up, the nickname stops feeling like an exaggeration and starts feeling like the only frame of reference that makes sense.

This is the largest intact old-growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the United States, a forest that has been allowed to grow and evolve naturally for centuries without human interruption. The park is also home to national and state champion trees, and park staff is still actively surveying and measuring to find new ones. The count isn’t finished yet.

How This Forest Survived at All

The history here runs deeper than the tree roots, and it’s worth knowing before you step onto the boardwalk.

The Swamp Fox himself, Francis Marion, used this exact landscape as cover during the Revolutionary War – striking British troops and vanishing into the flooded timber before they could respond. The dense, unpredictable terrain that made the park feel impenetrable to visitors made it tactically invaluable to Marion’s militia.

The forest itself survived logging for an almost accidental reason. The heavy cypress logs sank into the mud, and the logging mills kept being washed away by the floods. What felt like an obstacle to industry turned out to be the park’s protection. It was designated a national monument in 1976 and upgraded to national park status in 2003. It is one of the least-visited national parks in the country, which honestly explains why it feels so intact.

The Boardwalk, the Bees, and the Mosquito Meter

The main experience at Congaree is a boardwalk loop that normally runs about 3 miles. During Brian and Michelle’s visit, one section was closed, bringing the total to just over 2 miles, still enough to understand what the park is about.

The park posts a mosquito meter at the trailhead, an actual gauge rating current mosquito activity, which tells you everything about the kind of ecosystem you’re entering. On their visit, it sat at one, which counts as a good day. Come in summer, and the calculation changes significantly. If the meter reads anything above a three, pack accordingly or reconsider the timing entirely.

The boardwalk itself is well-constructed and runs right over the swamp water, putting you at eye level with the root systems of trees that have been standing for centuries. Brian and Michelle noted that the wobbly sections added an unplanned element of adventure and that the bees were more interested in Michelle than in the historical signage.

What the park doesn’t have: mountain overlooks, big cliffs, sweeping desert views. What it does have is something rarer: a forest that almost disappeared completely, preserved specifically because it was too wild to be useful to anyone who wanted to destroy it.

Is It Worth the Detour?

Michelle put it best on the boardwalk: the value of Congaree isn’t what it offers a visitor looking for entertainment, it’s what it represents as a piece of American landscape that survived when almost everything like it didn’t.

For full-time travelers passing through South Carolina, Congaree sits close enough to Columbia that skipping it costs almost nothing in time and misses something genuinely worth seeing. The visitor center closes early, the trails don’t light up at night, and there’s no resort infrastructure around it. That’s the point. Pull in, walk the boardwalk, read the history panels, and let the scale of the trees do the rest.

One practical note worth passing along: after the visitor center closes, the restrooms lock with it. Brian and Michelle learned that firsthand. Having a van with a bathroom on board turned a potential problem into a non-issue, one of those small van life advantages that only reveals itself in the field.

Little Pig’s Barbecue: The Right Way to End the Day

After the swamp, Brian and Michelle landed at Little Pig’s Barbecue just outside Columbia, a buffet-style local institution that operates at the complete opposite end of the atmosphere spectrum from a quiet national park.

Little Pig’s Barbecue is the kind of local spot that doesn’t need a reputation because the regulars already know. Brian and Michelle walked out full and satisfied, wondering why more road trip days don’t end like this.

For van life travelers moving through the Southeast, this combination, a national park that requires almost no planning and a local BBQ buffet within twenty minutes of the exit, is exactly the kind of day that justifies keeping the itinerary loose. What started as a simple wildlife outing gradually turned into something more memorable. The drive revealed a side of Central Florida many visitors rarely see, one shaped by restoration projects, quiet landscapes, and thousands of birds moving across protected wetlands. A Free Wildlife Drive That Feels Far From the City

The first surprise came before the drive even started. Brian and Michelle noticed a long line of vehicles waiting to enter the wildlife route, something they clearly did not expect from a free attraction hidden north of Orlando. The route stretches roughly 11 miles along former farm levees, allowing visitors to remain inside their vehicles while slowly moving through wetlands filled with wildlife.
